Material & Waste Management Policy

Introduction and Objective

At the Gladedale Group, we recognise the environmental and business benefits afforded by efficient materials and waste management. The introduction of new regulatory requirements (Site Waste Management Plans), and the rising cost of materials and waste management (increasing Landfill Tax), combined with government, industry and stakeholder performance expectations, emphasise the importance of clear approach in this area. It is essential that we commit to working with our employees, suppliers, contractors and designers to benchmark and reduce material consumption and waste sent to landfill, thereby capitalising on the environmental and financial benefits this can realise.

Policy Principles

We will use the following guiding principles to reduce materials consumption and waste generation:

  • Deliver on our commitment to halve the amount of construction, demolition and excavation waste going to landfill, by 2012
  • Design out waste from our products and operations
  • Specify materials that incorporate recycled content
  • Work with suppliers to reduce packaging waste
  • Implement good materials management on site to reduce damage and waste
  • Segregate waste materials to maximise recovery

Delivery

We will deliver on our commitment to materials and waste management through the following:

  • We will communicate our materials and waste management policy to all our employees, suppliers, contractors, designers and other relevant stakeholders.
  • We will work towards recovering 80% of construction waste arising on site, and achieving 20% recycled content in our construction materials.
  • We will set requirements in project procurement, and engage the supply chain. We will work towards achieving target rates for waste recovery and recycled materials content.
  • Implement site waste management plans on projects throughout the design and construction period that comply with regulatory requirements and include project-specific targets for waste recovery and recycled content of materials.
  • We will establish corporate baselines for waste generation, and measure performance at project level relative to the baselines.
  • We will report annually on overall corporate performance, and contribute data to the Waste and Resources Action Programme’s 'Waste to Landfill Reporting Portal' to enable benchmarking against other housebuilders.

Responsibility

The Managing Director is responsible for ensuring that this policy is adhered to.
All staff engaged with design, construction and procurement are responsible for complying with this policy.

This Materials and Waste Management Policy Statement is one of a series of policy statements of commitment and intent, and should not be read in isolation. The policy will be reviewed periodically to incorporate changes and remain positive and effective.
